Carman Wellness Connections (CWC) is pleased to welcome Nat Smirl as its new Program Director. Nat joins Executive Director Lisa Lehmann as part of CWC’s shared leadership model, bringing experience in community programming, volunteer management and supporting people facing barriers.
Together, they oversee daily operations, strengthen community partnerships and coordinate volunteers. Their shared leadership helps CWC remain sustainable while maintaining its volunteer-driven roots.
For Nat, joining Carman Wellness Connections is also about combining a lifelong passion for helping others with a strong belief in the power of community. “I’ve been passionate about creating a strong community, helping people, and volunteering since I was young,” Nat said. “I enjoy creating an understanding, open, and safe environment that promotes comfort and support for people from all walks of life. Carman Wellness Connections is exactly that – a place that connects people, supports our community, and genuinely wants to help people.”
A PASSION FOR PEOPLE AND COMMUNITY
Originally from Baldur, Manitoba, Nat recently made Carman home after completing post-secondary education in Winnipeg. Throughout her career, Nat has focused on supporting others, particularly those facing barriers.
Over the years, Nat has supported people from many backgrounds. Her work includes helping newcomers, people experiencing homelessness, individuals with disabilities and those facing financial hardship.” Her professional background includes arts, coaching, administration, programming, and community support.
“My personal experience and professional experience have led me to wanting to work in a position that advocates and supports people,” she says.
When asked to describe herself in three words, Nat chose determined, passionate, and patient, qualities that have guided both her career and volunteer work.
One thing many people may not know is that Nat is also a professional contemporary dancer! “I’ve had the opportunity to travel across Canada and work with choreographers from around the world.”
BUILDING A COMMUNITY WHERE EVERYONE BELONGS
Outside of work, Nat loves spending time outdoors, whether it’s canoeing, camping, hiking, snowboarding, or simply connecting with nature. She’s also passionate about agriculture, working with plants and animals, and spending time with family and friends sharing meals and making music together.
Nat brings experience in administration, grant writing, volunteer management, event planning and working with community boards.
Looking ahead, Nat is most excited about helping people build stronger connections with one another. “I think the most rewarding part of this work will be seeing people connect and build community, and being part of that change. I’m excited to advocate for people whose voices aren’t always heard and to help build a stronger, more understanding community.”
For Nat, community wellness is built on belonging. “Community wellness means supporting the idea of belonging, understanding, and acceptance of differences. It’s about supporting your neighbours, celebrating each other, and creating opportunities to help one another. Everyone deserves a village behind them.”
LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE
As Program Director, Nat hopes to continue building on the strong foundation that Carman Wellness Connections has already established by helping create even stronger connections throughout the community. “What excites me most is the strong sense of community that already exists here. People are passionate about Carman and genuinely want to make it better. That gives me a lot of hope for what’s ahead,” she says.
Nat’s biggest goal for her first year is simple: build an even stronger community around Carman Wellness Connections. She also hopes to be remembered for helping people feel valued. “I hope people remember me as being passionate, stubborn, and compassionate.”
AN INVITATION TO CONNECT
Nat believes that even the smallest gestures can make a lasting difference. She says, “A community is something everyone needs. Something as simple as saying hello to someone who is new to the community, or someone you haven’t talked to in a while, can make all the difference in both of your lives.”
She also encourages others to become involved with Carman Wellness Connections. “Volunteering with CWC can be as simple as giving a couple of hours every once in a while. It’s a great way to get involved, make a real difference in our community, have fun, and make new friends along the way.”
As Nat settles into her role, she looks forward to helping Carman Wellness Connections build an even stronger, more connected community. Interested in being part of that work? Explore CWC’s volunteer opportunities and discover how you can get involved.
