Melissa’s Voice for Inclusion

Over the past two years, Melissa Emerson-Froebe has brought passion, authenticity, and a strong sense of purpose to the Carman Wellness Connections Board.

As Melissa wraps up her term with CWC, we want to recognize the unique perspective, dedication, and heart she has contributed to the organization and the community it serves.

Melissa’s decision to join the board was deeply personal. Inspired by the work of CWC and encouraged by people she respected, including Colin Hay, she also saw board service as a way to honour the memory of her friend, Janet Fowler.

“Beside working with inspiring women and hearing about it from Colin Hay, I joined to honour my friend Janet Fowler,” she shared.

Throughout her time with CWC, Melissa found the most rewarding part of the experience was working alongside fellow board members, volunteers, and community members who share a common goal.

“Working with the other board members and community members trying to make a difference in Carman,” she said.

While she expected to contribute to meaningful community work, one of the biggest surprises was how much she would learn along the way. Participating in training opportunities, including ASIST suicide intervention training, provided valuable knowledge and skills she continues to carry with her.

Melissa believes volunteering is about much more than giving back. “Volunteering builds character and is good for the soul,” she said when asked what she would tell someone considering joining CWC. That belief in service, growth, and community connection has shaped her approach throughout her time on the board.

When asked what thumbprint she hopes to leave behind, Melissa’s answer was simple but powerful: “A queer one.”

Her response reflects the importance of representation, inclusion, and ensuring everyone feels welcome and valued within the community.

For those just beginning their journey as a board member, Melissa offers a piece of advice delivered with a smile and a healthy dose of honesty.

“It’s a full-time volunteer gig,” she joked.

Outside of CWC, some people may be surprised to learn that Melissa is a bit ambidextrous. It’s a small detail, but perhaps fitting for someone who has never been afraid to approach challenges from different perspectives.

One of the accomplishments she is most proud of has nothing to do with professional achievements or volunteer work. Instead, it is the enduring relationship she has built with her wife over the past 27 years.

Looking ahead, Melissa hopes future leaders continue expanding CWC’s ability to meet people’s basic needs while treating everyone with dignity and respect. “That CWC is a place someone could get a bite to eat, shower and wash their clothes with dignity and respect,” she said. “And leave with the tools to make their lives better.” It’s a vision grounded in compassion, practical support, and a belief that every person deserves the opportunity to thrive.

If Melissa had to describe her time on the board in exactly six words?

“A white rapid water raft ride.”

It’s a fitting description of two years filled with challenges, growth, learning, and meaningful moments along the way.

Melissa, thank you for your service, your advocacy, and your commitment to helping make Carman a stronger and more inclusive community. Your contributions have helped shape Carman Wellness Connections, and your impact will continue to be felt long after your board term comes to an end.
